My Approach
I have 12 years of experience as a personal trainer and, in 2022, I was promoted to one of only three Icon Trainers in the UK at Virgin Active. My program is specifically designed to optimize full-body functionality and posture by enhancing joint articulation, muscle function, and body symmetry. For performance, I combine classical strength training with calisthenics and tailor performance nutrition plans to support both strength development and fat loss.
My personal training sessions integrate strength training, rehabilitation, manual therapy, biomechanics analysis and training, sports massage, and advanced techniques in calisthenics and sprint/speed training. Additionally, I have recently studied neuroscience and functional neuroanatomy. My nutrition programming draws on my MSc-Level/L7 Diploma in Performance Nutrition and incorporates a specialized fasting protocol, which has consistently proven effective for individuals who are psychologically prepared.
Novel Solutions Within My Personal Training ‘Product’
Over the past five years of my 12-year career as a personal trainer, I’ve dedicated myself to exploring areas of fitness that are largely unknown or overlooked by the broader industry, as well as areas that few individuals have mastered. This journey led me to study a unique blend of disciplines, including functional biomechanics, sports massage, neuroscience, strength and conditioning, sprint training, and foot/ankle specialization. My goal was to set myself apart by creating a truly distinctive approach. Below, you’ll find some of the methods I use, which challenge the conventional practices in training, nutrition, and rehabilitation.
Neuroscience & Proprioceptors
A key component of my program focuses on training the proprioceptor cells—movement detection cells—in the muscles and joints to fully understand the potential of the tissue. This approach prepares the tissues to handle a wide range of forces and stimuli, significantly reducing the risk of injury.
Glute, Groin & Lower Back Pain
My programs place a strong emphasis on analyzing and improving hip function, particularly in the groin area. This focus stems from widespread functional issues that are often overlooked in the industry, which contribute to lower back pain and dysfunction in many individuals.
Performance Nutrition Programs
My approach focuses on building upon existing habits to drive lasting behavior change in my clients' diets and attitudes toward food. I emphasize the importance of 'permanent change,' prioritizing consistency over short-term success.
Rotator Cuff Conditioning
After 1.5 years of practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I realized that my rotator cuff was a major limiting factor in all of my training. In response, I developed a transformative 7-movement program specifically for the rotator cuff, which all of my clients incorporate into their warmups.
3-Planes of Motion in All Joints
My custom-designed 10-Point Warmups engage all joints in the body across three planes of motion. This includes hinge joints, which may not typically move in all planes but are still subjected to forces from multiple directions. This approach is grounded in neuroscience.
Strength-Focussed with Barbells
I place a strong emphasis on strength as the primary goal for my clients. Achieving this requires an advanced understanding of the biomechanics involved in movements like squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses. Compound barbell training is a key focus, alongside rehabilitation and fat loss.
Neck & Jaw Program
An often overlooked area for aesthetic improvement is the neck and jaw. My programs deliver significant results in the neck, jaw, and facial regions through targeted exercises and muscle release techniques, combined with the right diet and a comprehensive full-body training regimen.
Foot & Ankle (For Knee & Back Pain)
Recognizing the fitness industry’s limited understanding of the critical role foot and ankle function plays in knee, hip, and back dysfunction, I completed two specialized courses to develop a robust approach for addressing these issues. This enables me to deliver rapid and profound positive outcomes for my clients.
Psych Coaching & Project Management
Despite my extensive expertise in both performance and rehabilitation, I regularly recommend that my clients consult other professionals for specific needs, such as joint releases or counseling. This collaborative approach is especially beneficial for addressing more complex or debilitating issues.
A Shortlist of My Own Injuries I Fixed with my 10 Point Warmup
-
Neck & Jaw Pain
After dislocation my right shoulder snowboarding and nearly getting my jaw broken in Thailand in my early twenties, I spent the rest of my twenties with ongoing issues. My neck was always painful on the left side and my jaw would occasionally click badly, causing pain for several days.
The 10P Warmup includes neck training in 4 directions and 2 jaw training techniques. It turned out that the right side of my neck, and left jaw muscles were very weak, and my right pterygoid jaw muscle was too tight. After a month of 10PW, my symptoms disappeared, allowing me to train harder and live better.
-
Low Back Pain
After squatting 130kg in my early twenties and not engaging my core properly, I pulled my back and couldn't walk for 2 days. Despite the rehabilitation, my back was never the same, and several years later I re-injured it squatting only 110kg. I took squats down to 60kg and deadlifts down from 140kg to 80kg.
The 10P Warmup includes foot and ankle mobilisation, muscle energy technique on the groin, and a full body mobility sequence called 3DMAPS. Within a few months of doing 10PW 4x/week, I was squatting 100kg with better form than ever and 130kg deadlifts as well. Both with no pain and plans to increase steadily.
-
Rotator Cuff / Shoulder Pain
Throughout my twenties, I was never able to take my bench press past 80kg or my standing military press past 40kg. However in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I was known to be incredibly strong and able to lock people much larger than me in positions with actual strength, not just leverage.
The 10P Warmup includes 7 different rotator cuff movements. It turns out that virtually every single person I test, fails on at least 2 of them. This was the case for me as well. My subscapularis on my right shoulder particularly had never worked since the dislocation. I now bench without pain at 90kg.
2023 PT & Training Videos
I spent a few months in early 2023 doing videos for Youtube. These were done before I fully consolidated all my knowledge, and created the 10-Point Warmup and many of the aforementioned principles noted in the above sections.
